Coast Guard Calls Off Search for Missing Kayaker

Local rescue units continuing their efforts

The U.S. Coast Guard has called off the search for a missing kayaker in the Long Island Sound.

The Fire Department received a 911 call around 4:40 a.m. Sunday alerting them to a person in the water off the Milford coast.

A  Milford man in his 20s and Michael Krupa, 22, of Middletown, had been kayaking when the boat flipped over, according to the fire department.

The men were unable to turn the kayak upright and attempted to swim to anchored vessels in the area of Charles Island.

Milford authorities rescued the Milford man who was able to swim to safety and transported him to the hospital.  There is no word on his condition. The kayak was located in the Long Island Sound.

The Coast Guard's Tiger shark (a large search and rescue boat) was out all night and all morning and called off the search Monday morning.

Milford Fire Battalion Chief Doug Edo told the Middletown Press the search for Krupa would likely continue one more day.

In July, a Fairfield man's unmanned sailboat was found in the waters off Charles Island.  Authorities scoured the Sound for two days for Raymond Callan, 57, before calling off the search.
