Milford's New Park and Beach Booze Rules

Milford is changing its policy on alcohol at picnic areas a bit.

Residents can now apply for a permit to have booze when they rent picnic areas for events, according to the New Haven Register.

Until now, permits were only granted to organizations. The city ordinance allowed only "associations, clubs, societies or similar organizations" to apply for alcohol permits, the paper reported. But the Park, Beach and Recreation Commission changed the language to include individuals as well.

The new ordinance gives people wishing to hold a family reunion or other gathering at a picnic area to have the same rights as a group.

Though getting a permit won't be a day at the beach. People wanting the permits need to go through the same process as organizations, which includes getting special insurance coverage for serving alcohol at an event, The Register reported.

"If the individual can go out and gather the necessary insurance, they should be on the same level as an organization," commission Chairman Daniel Worroll told the paper.
