Mixmaster Plans in Mix But on Hold

Plans to redesign the multi-decked “Mixmaster” are still in the mix, officials say, just not right now.

For a third time, the board of aldermen has declined to take action on the plan that would affect the busy Route 8, Interstate 84 area.

A study by a New Haven-based engineering and consulting firm found the “Mixmaster” - the area including the interchange of I-84, Route 8 and local roads in downtown Waterbury – to be outdated and dangerous, the New York Times reported in 2005.

The town’s Economic Task Force voted to support the Department of Transportation’s proposal to move Route 8 to the east of the Naugatuck River, Waterbury Mayor, Michael Jarjura said. Jarjura said he’s not sure what’s holding up the plan.
