Mom Passed Out Drunk With Kids in Car: Cops

Police said her blood-alcohol level was four times the legal limit.

A Naugatuck mother was arrested after being found passed out behind the wheel with her two children in the car, according to police.

Some teenagers were playing basketball nearby and called 911 after seeing Randie Murphy, 28, unresponsive in her car on the side of Beacon Manor Circle around 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

"All of a sudden when we were playing basketball we hear vroom, vroom, vroom," said Dan Renzoni.  "She was in her car completely passed out with the two kids in the back."

"I was thinking maybe she was fixing her car or stuff like that," said David Andrade. "She does it again and I look over and she's not responding."

The woman's children were terrified, according to the teens.

"One was just staring at me like help me and the other one was trying to call his mom and the mom never answered," said Andrade.

Officers quickly arrived and found Murphy passed out behind the wheel with the car still running, police said. Her children, ages 3 and 4, were in the back seat.  Several bottles of liquor were also found in the vehicle, police said.

Murphy's blood-alcohol level was four times the legal limit, according to police. She was charged with operating under the influence and risk of injury to a child.

She was just released from alcohol rehab a week ago, according to court documents.

The children were taken into custody by the Department of Children and Families.

Murphy was held in custody after a judge increased her bond to $40,000 in court on Friday.
