Man Who Crashed Into Stamford Cafe on Probation

Samuel Leighton was accused of hitting a cafe in Stamford.

Ten people were hurt when a car drove through Café Oo La La in Stamford during lunchtime in August and the man accused of crashing into the restaurant has received two years of probation.

Police said Samuel Leighton, 93, of Stamford, accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the brake and went into the cafe in the Ridgeway Shopping Center on Summer Street.

Two women who were sitting at a table in front were struck, then the car continued through the front window of the café and struck several other customers who were sitting inside the café until the car stopped at the counter, police said.

Ten customers, including an infant and a pregnant woman, were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries, ranging from lacerations to broken bones.

Leighton was charged with reckless endangerment and reckless vehicle operation.
