22 years after being convicted of murder, Adam Zachs was finally sent to prison Thursday.
Zachs, 48, has spent the last two decades on the run. In 1989, he was convicted of shooting and killing Peter Carone outside the Prospect Cafe in West Hartford two years earlier. Carone made a joke inside the bar that set Zachs off for some reason. Zachs left, returned with a gun and shot Carone in the back, according to prosecutors.
While out on appeal, Zachs took off, and was free, until authorities finally caught up with him in Mexico.
"I prayed this would happen in my lifetime, and it has," Addie Carone, Peter's mother, said outside Hartford Superior Court.
Carone's friends packed the courtroom to see Zachs finally put behind bars.
"I'm glad this guy is finally going to a place where he belongs," Chris Bonee said.
After a short hearing, a judge sent Zachs to prison, to begin serving his 60-year sentence for Carone's murder.

Zachs had been living a new life, with a new name. He is now married with two children, and police believe his wealthy family has helped fund his life on the run. Frederick Zachs, Adam's father, recently pleaded guilty to aiding his son as a fugitive.
"I will never ever forgive this family for what they have done," Addie Carone said. "Shame, shame on them all."
