Neighborhood Evacuated During Willimantic Barricade

A Willimantic neighborhood was evacuated this afternoon after a man barricaded himself inside his home on the Jackson Street section of Route 195, according to police.

Police said it happened around 2 p.m. Friday when the 41-year-old man threatened to hurt himself and began sending alarming text messages to his wife. After reading the messages, police evacuated the area and blocked off the road.

The Willimantic Special Operations Group and a police negotiator responded to the scene.

Officers tried to several times to contact the man. After an hour of negotiations, he agreed to go outside. Police said he left the house but was uncooperative and was shot with a Taser.

The man was not injured but was taken to Windham Hospital for an evaluation, according to police.

A neighbor living across the street said she has noticed police activity at that home before, but wasn't sure why the police had been there in the past.

No charges have been filed at this time.
