Pawn Shop Worker Helps Nab Suspected Church Thieves

Two New York men were arrested in New Haven, accused of stealing silver from a church.

A New Haven pawn shop employee helped police in New York find two people suspected of stealing silver items from an Episcopal church last week.

Police in Troy, New York told Newschannel 13, the NBC affiliate in Albany, that an employee from Superior Exchange called officers to report that two men were trying to sell him seven silver items.

Joseph Plouffe, 32, of Watervliet, New York, and James Zaremski, 29, of Albany, were taken into custody at the store.

Plouffe and Zaremski are accused of stealing 11 sterling silver items, including a chalice and bowl for a church in Troy.

According to court records, New Haven police arrested the two men on Monday and charged them with larceny.

Zaremski was also charged with interfering with and officer, resisting arrest.

Burglary charges are also expected, Newschannel 13 reports.

Another tip that led to the arrests came from a coin shop in Albany that provided police with a receipt after buying silver from the two men.

Court records also show that Plouffe was also arrested in New Haven on May 20, 2011 and charged with fifth-degree larceny and second-degree failure to appear.
