A police officer and a suspect were taken to the hospital after gunfire in New Haven Tuesday.

Several undercover officers from New Haven Police Department identified a man with an active arrest warrant on Lamberton Street around 5:44 p.m.

The suspect, who was later identified as 22-year-old Marcus Rivera, of New Haven, engaged officers in a foot pursuit, police said. Rivera was eventually apprehended, but managed to get free and flee from police.

An exchange of gunfire took place as Rivera continued to try and escape from police, officers said.

Once Rivera arrived near First Avenue, police were able to take him into custody without further incident.

Officers later learned Rivera had sustained a gunshot wound to his pelvis area. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for an evaluation and is currently in critical, but stable condition, according to police.

There were no officers injured in the incident. An officer was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

The State's Attorney's Office and Connecticut State Police are investigating.

Editor's note: Police initially said the suspect fired at the officer, but later said that is under investigation.
