New Haven Police Make Arrest in Stabbing Death

Semmion Watson, 44, is accused of murdering Anthony Stevenson on Sunday night.

New Haven police have charged a 44-year-old man with the city's latest murder.

Officers arrested Semmion Watson on Monday for the murder of 49-year-old Anthony Stevenson.

Stevenson was found stabbed to death inside an apartment at 216 Spring Street on Sunday.

Police received a 911 call from someone claiming to have been stabbed in a house in the area of Spring Street and Washington Avenue around 10:22 p.m. on Saturday, but the caller did not give a specific address. Dispatchers made numerous attempts to call the victim's phone, but the calls went unanswered, police said.

A person walking by the home on Spring Street on Sunday morning saw Stevenson lying on the floor through an open door and called police.

Watson, who is the tenant in the apartment building where Stevenson was found, quickly became the prime suspect, according to police.

"New Haven detectives have worked tirelessly since yesterday morning," Chief Dean Esserman said in a statement.

An officer on patrol saw Watson Monday and took him into custody on Monday.
