New London Police Union Sues Chief, City

Union president claims Chief Margaret Ackley retaliated against him.

The president of New London's police union is suing the city and Police Chief Margaret Ackley on allegations he was punished for his outspoken criticism of department management.

Union President Toddy Lynch filed a 44-page lawsuit Thursday alleging that Ackley retaliated against him, according to The Day of New London. The lawsuit came a day after the union filed a complaint with state labor officials claiming city officials have created an anti-union environment.

Lynch has criticized Ackley's management and claims she disciplined him by taking actions including changing his work schedule and suspending his police dog from service.

Ackley didn't immediately return a phone message Friday.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio defends Ackley and says the police union is trying to block changes the chief has made in the department.
