New Technology For Bradley Airport

The new system will help avoid problems that could strand passengers on planes.

Connecticut transportation officials have announced a new system to inform airlines of ground delays following two incidents when passengers were stranded at Bradley International Airport.

The Connecticut Airport Authority and the airport said Thursday they are using a digital notification system to communicate more quickly with airlines about significant safety issues or other problems.

The system will allow Bradley to issue a "Notice to Airmen" electronically through the Federal Aviation Administration's national system.

A London-to-Newark, N.J., Virgin Atlantic flight was diverted to the Connecticut airport in June 2010, stranding passengers on the plane for as long as four hours.

During the October snow storm last year, 29 planes were diverted to Bradley, stranding hundreds of passengers.

Officials announced other changes, including the opening of two gates and more waiting areas and rest rooms.
