New Year's Eve Party Ends in Fight With Cop

Police said a fight started over stolen cell phones and a teen tried to bite a cop.

Police charged two women and a teen after a New Year’s Eve party in Vernon got out of control, police said.

Vernon police went to 68 George Drive just after 7 a.m. on Sunday morning after getting several 911 calls about a fight outside the single-family home. It was over the thefts of two cell phones during a large New Year’s Eve party at the house that was still going into the next morning, police said.

The people suspected of stealing the cell phones were trying to leave in a vehicle and Shadella Rogers, 25, of Middletown was walking toward the car, carrying a 4-foor pole, police said.

An officer told Rogers to drop the pole, but she refused, so the officer took it from her hands and tried to handcuff her, but she struggled, police said.

At this point, the people who were in the car got out and began yelling and swearing at the officer, who radioed for help because he was outnumbered 5 to 1, police said.

The first responding officer handcuffed Rogers and another officer came to help.

Two other people, including Rooty Thomas, 33, of Hartford, had initially walked away from the car, but Thomas eventually returned, confronted the police and stared yelling and screaming at them, according to a news release from Vernon police.

As police tried to calm her down, One of Thomas’ 16-year-old relatives got involved, began fighting with one of the officers and attempted to bite an officer, police said. An officer used a stun gun on his back to get him under control.

A third officer arrived and helped handcuff the teen.

All three suspects were taken into custody without injury.

One officer suffered scratches and had a minor injury to his arm.

Police charged Rogers and Thomas with interfering with a police officer and breach of peace.

Both posted a $5,000 surety bond and are scheduled to appear in the Rockville Court on Jan. 10.

The 16 year old male juvenile’s name has not been released. He was charged with interfering with a police officer, assault on a police officer and breach of peace

He is scheduled to appear in the Hartford Juvenile Court on Jan. 10.

The homeowner did not wish to press charges for the theft or fight.
