No Contest Plea in Spring Weekend Death

The man charged with throwing the punch that killed Jafar Karzoun, 20, of Milford during Spring Weekend at the University of Connecticut last year pleaded no contest to manslaughter on Friday.

Edi Rapo, of East Hartford, was in court on Friday and will be sent to prison for up to five-and-a-half years.

Rapo, who was not a UConn student, punched Karzoun in the face on April 23, 2010 outside a restaurant during the annual weekend of parties, prosecutors said.

Karzoun fell, hit his head and later died.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 9. Rapo's full sentence would be 10 years, suspended after five and a half, followed by five years of probation under the agreement.

Rapo's lawyer, William Gerace, may argue for a shorter prison term.

With a no-contest plea, the defendant does not admit or deny guilt. Gerace said Rapo pleaded no contest because a lawsuit is pending.

Donald Altschuler, a lawyer who represents the family of the victim, Jafar Karzoun, said Rapo avoids accepting responsibility with his no-contest plea.
