No Override to Governor's Vetoes

GOP senator blasts Malloy over airport plan timing.

Democratic leaders of the state General Assembly did not attempt to override any of fellow Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy's six vetoes during the annual veto session.

Leaders said they plan to find a compromise with Malloy on at least two of his vetoes.

Senate President Donald Williams said ideas for expanding economic development around the Oxford Airport would be taken up during a planned special legislative session on job creation in September.

Malloy vetoed a bill that created a tax credit program, saying it was premature.

Republican Sen. Rob Kane said Malloy should have signed that bill instead of waiting until September, noting that unemployment is 11.2 percent in the greater Waterbury area.

“Gov. Malloy first called the Oxford Airport bill’s almost unanimous passage ‘premature,’ saying he wanted to wait until the recently created Connecticut Airport Authority came up with a more detailed plan. Now, the governor says Democrat leaders will work to 'develop an appropriate set of economic development tools' for the airport's growth,” Kane said.

Lawmakers and Malloy also want to expand public involvement in health insurance rate approvals.
