No Place to Hide for Sex Offenders

The state now require schools to be made aware of offenders

Connecticut school superintendents may find a little bit of comfort with Gov. Rell's approval of a bill that closes a loophole in sex offender laws.

The state Department of Public Safety is now required to alert the superintendent of schools when a sex offender moves into the neighborhood.

The DPS must simply e-mail the superintendent the registrant’s name, address, date of birth, race and general description. This is information was already publicly available through the state’s “Megan’s Law” sex offender registry, but now schools will be getting it directly.

Rell thought it was important to close this loophole where schools weren’t required to be notified.  In a statement she said, “Connecticut residents – and particularly our state’s children – deserve all the information we can provide them about sex offenders. This new law ensures that heightened protection.”

The law takes effect September 1, just in time for the new school year.
