Nude Photos Get Bounced From Exhibit

Two days before an art exhibit in Norwich pairing the work of a local photographer with the abstract paintings of an artist was to open, the show has been severely edited because of nude photos.

The exhibited at Three Rivers Community College, which was supposed to be "Abstract Nudes and Kaleidoscopes" will be minus the nudes, the Norwich Bulletin reports.

The school decided on Wednesday to ban the nude images by photographer Peter J. Crowley.

College president Grace Jones told the Bulletin that she knew some people would see censorship in the college's decision.

"It wasn't a personal choice. It's a public space," she said of the gallery, which has a wall of glass doors and windows.

"An Administrative decision has been made to not show my photos at Roberta’s opening because they are nudes. I encourage you to go and see Roberta’s Art as I am honored to inspire such a talented, strong artist in a very uninspired State," Crowley wrote on his Web site.

There wasn't a way to position the exhibit so that passersby could avoid seeing the nudes, she told the newspaper.

The painter, Roberts Sulls, is an alumna of Three Rivers, arranged the exhibit at The Gallery of Three Rivers Community College. She calls the school's decision to ban the photographs that inspired her work a "disservice to the students."

She says they are not full frontals, rather more discreet photographs.
