Occupiers Clean Green as Deadline Approaches

An online petition asks for Occupiers to leave.

Occupy New Haven protestors who have been living on the New Haven Green since October 2011 have another week before they learn if they have to leave.

So, they are trying to clean up the green in hopes that they can stay longer, but the movement is getting some push back. An online petition that ask occupiers to leave the green has close to 50 signatures and more than 100 likes on Facebook.

"We've picked up a lot of tents that have been abandoned and stuff -- cleaned up a lot of mess," Ty Hailey, a New Haven Occupier, said.

Some occupiers planted flowers, while others put up a visible barricade surrounding their tents.

Some people who signed this petition said they're not against the movement. They're against where it's set up.

Mike Zaiko said he plans on signing the petition later today.

"I think we should just get rid of them. I think we should have the police come in, storm and get rid of it," Zaiko said.

Occupiers said they are not leaving.

"If they're claiming to support the movement at the same time saying we should move, they really don't understand our movement." Alex Suarez said.

Occupiers are due back in court on March 28, when they will find out if they can stay or must pack up and leave this historic landmark.

"I don't see any better public place than this public space," Hailey said.
