Officers Return to Halls of Middletown High

Armed police officers are once again working at Middletown High School.

School Resource officers returned to the school Monday after the school board and police chief signed an agreement on Dec. 22.

The school board voted to remove the SROs after a student was tasered in September following an argument over a Jamaican beef patty in the school cafeteria.

“The teachers wanted them back, the parents wanted them back, and the students wanted them back,” said Mayor Sebastian Giuliano.

Lt. Heather Desmond of the Middletown Police says she is pleased that the SROs are back inside the schools.

The officers will still be carrying their weapons, including tasers inside the school.

As part of the agreement, two SROs will work at Middletown High School instead of three. They will only make an arrest if a felony occurs, a weapon is involved, illegal drugs are involved or a specific complaint is lodged for a misdemeanor.

“You got to remember you are in an educational setting, and the whole point is education,” said Mayor Giuliano.
