Old, Cold Pipes Keep MDC Busy

You think the cold is hurting you? It’s worse on the pipes underground that bring your water.

Just about every day, the Metropolitan District employees are fixing a water main that broke. The reasons are cold weather and old pipes, MDC Chief Executive Officer Scott Jellison said.

“The average age of our infrastructure is 75 years. The majority of our pipes that are breaking that we're dealing with are in that are 100- to 125-year-old piping system, Jellison said.

The commission leaders listen to weather forecasts to determine if they need to put extra people on staff, because the colder it gets, the more people they need.

The MDC plans to fix the oldest pipes first, while Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez said he wants President Barack Obama to send funding to fix infrastructure.
