Thundersnow Reported: 6″ to 14″ of Snow

Thundersnow is occurring in many places - meaning the storm overhead is still quite powerful.  Reports of thunder are coming in from Southington, Montville, Manchester, North Haven, and Cheshire, to name a few.

Snow is falling quickly. Depending on locations, snow accumulations could range from 6 inches to a foot along the shore, to 8-14 inches inland.

At times, the snow will be quite heavy, making driving difficult.  And once we're through with this storm, another is right behind on Sunday.

Even before the first snowflake hit the ground, the state Department of Transportation had already hit the ground running. They've been pre-treating roads to make sure they're not slippery.  The DOT has a full force of plows out, clearing roadways.

Last year's huge December snowstorm left many drivers, even those with short commutes, on the roads for hours.

This year, Gov. M. Jodi Rell asked 12 major companies like Aetna and Phoenix to stagger the times they dismiss their employees. Still, other companies are asking employees to work from home today.

All non-emergency Hartford city employees were dismissed starting at noon and City Hall was closed.

The 311 call center will remain open until 6 p.m. for residents with non-emergency questions and it will also be open on Saturday morning.

There are problems on highways across the state, state police said.

One of the big problems was on Interstate 95 South in Stonington. The road was closed Friday afternoon when a tractor-trailer carrying lumber was in a collision and 48,000 pounds of wood were scattered on the highway.

If you are heading out onto the roadways, the DOT is asking you to give plow drivers plenty of room.

About 30 flights have been canceled at Bradley International Airport, airport spokesman John Wallace said. He urges customers to check with the airline before heading out for flights or to pick someone up who is scheduled to arrive.

More than 500 flights have been canceled at airports in New York City -- 380 at Newark Liberty International Airport, 57 flights at Kennedy Airport and 150 have been canceled at LaGuardia.

Arriving flights are coming in two hours late at Kennedy Airport and departures and arrivals are one hour late at LaGuardia.

While many things are closed, hotels at the MGM Grand and Foxwoods are open.

The casinos are open, entertainment is on and food and beverage services are open.

Evening bingo, however, is canceled and Keno race book is closed and should reopen Saturday.

The Pequot museum and dealer school are also closed.
