OpSail begins in New London.

A U.S. Coast Guard training ship will leave New London on Thursday and lead OpSail 2012, a national three-year event that ends in 2015.

Capt. Eric Jones, commanding officer of the USCG Barque Eagle, said this parade of ships commemorates the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

The ship will travel along the Eastern seaboard and to the Gulf of Mexico.

Jose Fuentes, chairman of Operation Sail, said tall ships from Russia, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico and the United States will take part in the multi-port commemoration.

OpSail will visit several ports during the three-month journey and all public ship tours are free.
