Rock Cats to Honor Newtown on Opening Day

Baseball season is underway and you can get in on the action in New Britain.

The home opener for the Rock Cats is tonight and the team will be wearing Sandy Hook Elementary School patches on their uniforms to honor the lives lost in Newtown this past December.

The Rock Cats are playing the Portland Sea Dogs and both teams have Connecticut natives on their rosters.

Naugatuck native, Pat Dean, who pitched briefly at New Britain in 2011 will be in the Rock Cats starting rotation.

Bethel native Matt Barnes, who was a star baseball player at UConn, is a pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs.

Before the game, there will be food and drink specials in Samuel Adams Bar and Grill and there will be an opening night salute to first responders.

The game will also serve as a benefit for the Sandy Hook Workers Assistance Fund.

Two ticket packages have been put together with a portion of the ticket proceeds going to the fund. You can buy five tickets for $35 or 20 tickets for $140.

Fans can also buy a special Rock Cats jersey that features a Sandy Hook commemorative patch.

You can also purchasing balls for the postgame Launch-A-Ball.

Individual tickets are still available for the home opener and all seven games during the first homestand by calling the Rock Cats Box office at 860-224-8383.

Enjoy the fireworks after the game.

The Sea Dogs will be here through Sunday for a four-game stretch.
