Pain Management Doc Charged in 2nd Patient's Death

Police said two of Dr. Ven Hsu's patients died of drug overdoses.

A West Hartford pain management specialist who was charged in connection with a patient's drug-overdose death in 2010 has been charged with second-degree manslaughter after another woman patient of a drug overdose.

Waterbury police have charged Ven Hsu, 69, of Waterbury, in connection with the death of a 48-year-old woman on June 30, 2010 in Waterbury.

Police said Hsu was prescribing methadone far in excess of the dosage normally required for the treatment of pain. He turned himself in on Tuesday afternoon and was released on $45,000 bond.

Waterbury police said these charges were filed as a result of a lengthy investigation into the April 2009 untimely death of a 35-year-old female patient of Hsu's who overdosed on pain medication.

Police said the 35-year-old woman died of multiple drug toxicity. Hsu pleaded not guilty in that case. He is due in court on April 25 in that case.

He was charged with second-degree manslaughter and illegal distribution of narcotics in both cases.

In December 2010, the state medical examining board revoked Hsu's license.
