Parents Plead Not Guilty in Toddler's Shooting Death

The parents of a Jewett City toddler who died after accidentally shooting himself in the head pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday.

Jason and Rebecca Matteau were arrested in August in connection with the death of their 2-year-old son Wyatt. They were arraigned Tuesday.

On the morning of Aug. 28, Rebecca Matteau was watching television with Wyatt and her 3-month-old daughter just minutes before the shooting, according to court documents. The children's father was sleeping in the bedroom.

Minutes later the boy shot himself, and he died less than two hours later.

The couple said their son picked up a gun that was on a nightstand in their bedroom on Aug. 28 and shot himself.

Court documents show that moments before the shooting, Rebecca Matteau warned him not to touch his father's gun because of the "bad boo-boos" it could cause.

Jason Matteau is charged with criminally negligent storage of a firearm and risk of injury. Rebecca Matteau was charged with risk of injury.

They are due back in court on Nov. 19.
