Middlefield Man Killed in Middletown Crash

Michael Galizia was trying to cross four lanes of traffic between George Street and Plaza Drive when he was hit by a Jeep Liberty., police said

Middletown police are investigating after a 59-year-old Middlefield man was struck and killed on Route 66 around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police said Michael Galizia was trying to cross four lanes of traffic between George Street and Plaza Drive when he was hit by a Jeep Liberty.

Galizia was taken to Middlesex Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, William Smith, 59, of Springfield Massachusetts, was going at least 35 miles an hour, said police. He was not injured.

Galizia was not crossing in a crosswalk, police said, and it is unclear if Smith saw him or had enough time to brake before the crash.

Route 66 Eastbound was shut down for a few hours as police investigated. It has since re-opened.

Police ask anyone with information relevant to the investigation to call the traffic unit.
