Son Describes Pit Bull Victim's Injuries

Police shot the dogs because they were acting aggressively.

A 88-year-old Waterbury woman was recovering at the hospital Wednesday night, after she was mauled by two pit bulls outside of her home on Tuesday.

NBC Connecticut spoke exclusively with her son, who gave a graphic description of her condition.  “They bit her to the bone, they tore the flesh off of her,” said Paul Poidomani.  He spent hours at the hospital visiting his mother Lina. “She’s in a lot of pain, her right leg is torn up pretty bad,” Poidomani added.

He said Lina Poidomani was taking out the garbage at her home along Wilkenda on Tuesday night when two pit bulls somehow escaped from their cage next door and went right after her.  “They bit her to pieces...they bit her to pieces,” Poidomani added.

He explained, Lina’s arms and legs were torn up from the dog bites, and several of her bones were broken.  He said she didn’t remember the frightening attack, because of Alzheimer’s.  “ She's 88 years old for god sakes.  The last thing this lady needs to have is this,” Poidomani said.

Waterbury Police credited a neighbor for saving Lina Poidomani’s life.  He saw her getting attacked at her home and knew he had to do something to help.  “I just hopped in the car and I had no idea what I was about to do,” said Burt Horton.  He drove to Poidomani’s home and blasted the car horn to distract the dogs, and it worked. “It startled them, and I got out and yelled at them, and they ran back into their yard,” Horton explained.

Police said when they arrived, the dogs were so aggressive, they had to shoot and kill them.

According to investigators, the dogs belonged to two different owners and they could be in trouble if investigators find the cage wasn’t secure enough.

“At this point in time I’m more concerned with her getting out of the hospital and then we'll deal with that,” Paul Poidomani said.  On Wednesday he was just grateful she survived. “Why would they attack an 88 year old lady? Why?” he questioned.  He said he will eventually push for answers on how the dogs got out.

Police expect to file charges after confirming who owned the pit bulls.
