Police Commissioners to Take Up Chief's Retirement

East Haven Police Chief Leonard Gallo will retire on Friday.

Police commissioners in East Haven plan to vote on whether to urge the mayor to fire Police Chief Leonard Gallo instead of letting him retire amid allegations that local officers abused Latinos.

The meeting is set for Tuesday evening.

The commission board's chairman said Gallo shouldn't be allowed to retire and collect a severance lump sum of $130,000 to $150,000.

Gallo announced his retirement on Monday, following the FBI arresting four officers last week for an alleged campaign against Latinos that included beatings, false arrests and harassment. The officers have pleaded not guilty.

Gallo's lawyer, Jon Einhorn, said his client is an unnamed co-conspirator in the federal indictment, and is accused of blocking efforts by the police commission to investigate misconduct.
Einhorn denies the claims.

The New York FBI office has established an email address and a tipline for public cooperation in the investigation.

The email address is easthaventips@ic.fbi.gov. The tipline is (212) 384-1000. Names of those providing information will remain confidential. The line is staffed 24 hours a day and Spanish-speaking workers are available.
