Police ID SCSU Student, Hartford Woman Killed in NY Crash

New York state police have identified a 22-year-old Southern Connecticut State University student and a Hartford woman who were killed during a snowstorm on Interstate 95 in Rye, New York.

Kayla Anne Donnelly-Smith, 22, of Hamden, and Winter Krzysztof, 61, were killed on Monday while standing on the side of the highway outside their cars after being involved in a minor crash.

Police said a vehicle lost control and struck Donnelly-Smith and the Krzysztof and their cars. Both women were killed instantly.

Donnelly-Smith was a junior at SCSU, where she volunteered as a coach for the cheerleading team. She was a native of Bellmore, Long Island but lived in Hamden while attending school here in Connecticut, according to a statement from the school.

SCSU is providing support services for students.

The other motorist, 46-year-old Tai Zhao, had minor injuries.

The crash occurred at about 1:15 p.m. during a storm with snow and freezing rain.

The cause of the crash is being investigated. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday evening.
