Police ID Victims in Westbrook Plane Crash

Connecticut State Police have identified the two passengers aboard a single engine plane that went down in Westbrook on Friday afternoon.

The men were identified as Arthur Szu of Amity, NY and Peter P. Bendzlowicz of Wading River, NY.

The plane was found upside down one mile into the Cockaponset State Forest off of Chittenden Hill Road police said.

EMS personnel were able to extricate Szu who was then transported via Lifestar helicopter to Yale New Haven Hospital. Bendzlowicz was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 911 call was made at 3:30 p.m. reporting a small plane went down near the Chester Airport and 911 contacted the Federal Aviation Administration in Windsor Locks.

One call into authorities reported a plane was having engine trouble. State police searched along Route 145 near Messerschmidt Pond.

According to State Police the plane departed out of Brookhaven in Shirley, NY and was en route to the Chester Airport when it went down.

The call reporting the plane going down is on Live ATC.net.

“There is an aircraft right now that was in distress and it possible did go down north of the airport in Chester, Connecticut,” according to the call to air traffic control to Bradley Airport.  (scroll to 25:47)

State Police, the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are continuing to investigate the crash.
