Man Shot in Foot, Police Investigate Circumstances

Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a New Haven man being shot in the foot.

Deion Payne, 21, of New Haven, was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital for a gunshot wound in his foot and told police called to the hospital that he was the victim of an armed robbery. Police responded there at 2:11 p.m. on Sunday.

Payne told police that a person tried to rob him and shot him in the foot in the area of George and Day Streets in New Haven, police said. A friend drove him to the hospital for treatment, Payne told police.

Detectives interviewed people in the area but said that none of them said they witnessed a crime of that nature. Police have not found evidence at this time of a shooting. The department did not receive any reports of gunshots and none were picked up on the department's ShotSpotter system used to detect any gunshots fired in the city.

New Haven police continue to investigate.
