Norwalk High School was dismissed early Tuesday out of an abundance of caution after a student heard what he thought sounded like someone pulling back the slide of a handgun in the men’s room around 8:30 a.m., according to police. They said they did not find a weapon or evidence during a search of the school.
The student did not see a gun and no threats were made, according to police, and school staff reported the incident to the Norwalk Police School Resource Officer assigned to Norwalk High School at 10:43 a.m.
The school resource officer and an extra duty officer assigned to a daily security detail at Norwalk High School contacted dispatchers and searched the men’s room as well as the immediate area and found nothing concerning.
Norwalk High School staff placed the school into Protect-In-Place status, so no students were allowed to leave the campus or their classrooms and no one was permitted to enter the campus. Students were then dismissed early, at 1:30 p.m.
Once the school was empty, the Stamford Police Bomb Squad K9 Unit was brought in, the school was searched for firearms and none were located.
Police said there is no evidence to substantiate the complaint, no arrests have been made and none are expected.
Norwalk High School staff were also checking classrooms, lockers and bags.
On Wednesday, Norwalk High School staff will assist students with retrieving their belongings left behind today.
