Cop, Suspect Shot During Altercation

Officers were trying to arrest the suspect on child porn charges, police said.

An investigation into a child porn case resulted in an officer and the suspect being shot at a movie theater parking lot in Plainville early Saturday morning.

Police from Southington and Plainville went to the AMC Loew's Theater on New Britain Avenue to serve a warrant charging Eric Gothberg, 45, of Southington with third-degree child porn possession after learning he might be at a late night movie.

When officers arrived shortly after 2 a.m., Gothberg was leaving the theater and walking to his car.

Officers from both departments approached Gothberg, but he got into his car and did not comply with police, according to release from state police.

Gothberg then made sudden motions and officers shot just as two back up officers arrived on scene, police said.

Gothberg was shot in the foot and a Plainville officer was shot in the arm.  Another Plainville officer suffered injuries from glass fragments.

The Hartford Courant reports that Plainville police shot their fellow officers.

Gothberg and the two officers suffered non life-threatening injured, police said.

The State's Attorney's Office and State Police are investigating the shooting.
