Police Make Arrest in Smash-and-Grab Spree

Police have made an arrest in a suspected smash-and-grab spree.

Farmington police arrested Tony Mercado, 19, of Hartford, on Thursday. He is suspected of being involved in the burglary at Kar Kraft Shell on Nov. 19.

He’s accused of stealing $800 worth of cigarettes from the shop at the Shell station.

In one night in November, closed service stations, liquor stores and convenience stores in at least eight towns were burglarized. They were all along Interstate 84 between Hartford and Cheshire. In several incidents, front glass doors were smashed and money and cigarettes were stolen. Kar Kraft Shell gas station, at 342 Colt Highway, in Farmington, was one of them.

Police in several towns have been trying to crack a spree of robberies since November. Detectives worked together, watched surveillance videos and identified suspects.

Police said more arrests are expected.

Mercado was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary, second-degree conspiracy to commit criminal mischief, fifth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, second-degree criminal mischief and fifth-degree larceny. He
