Police have released the name of a 19-year-old New Milford man who died after a water emergency at Bantam Lake on Sunday.

Police responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. Sunday after Leonel Salvador, 19, of New Milford, went underwater and did not surface.

Police said they found him after searching the vicinity of the Point Folly campground. Salvador was about 50 yards out in 12 feet of water, according to police. It is unclear how long it took the dive team to find him.

Police said Salvador was having issues swimming and his girlfriend tried to help him out but was unsuccessful.

Salvador was transported to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington where he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5 p.m., police said.

    Police are investigating the incident.
