Man Dead After Long Police Standoff in Groton

Sub base military will be granted an administrative leave until the incident is over.

An hours-long standoff in Groton ended Wednesday afternoon with a man dead, according to police.

The man barricaded himself in a home on Orion Avenue, near the Navy Lodge in Groton Tuesday night.

Groton police said they were called to the home at 7:18 p.m. to investigate a disturbance and a woman told them her husband was in the house and had fired a handgun.

Officers removed the woman and children from the home, set up a perimeter, evacuated residents in the area and called in mutual aid, including police from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and the FBI.

Residents in the neighborhood, which is described by police as mostly military families, were asked to shelter in place and a SWAT team was called in.

Police said the man was found dead just after noon. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of the man's death.

A post on the Naval Submarine Base New London Facebook page says the (SUBASE) Child Development Center was closed today because of the incident.

The Sub Base Facebook post says SUBASE military living in the area were granted administrative leave until the incident was over and said personnel with questions about reporting to work should contact their chain of command.
