Postal Worker Killed by Falling Tree

A freak accident claimed the life of a postal worker in Bethlehem. 52-year-old Barbara Satula of Naugatuck was on her regular postal route when wind caused a tree fell on her mail truck with her inside.  The accident happened just after 11 a.m. Tuesday on Weekeepeemee Rd.

“She succumbed to her injuries. She received a massive head injury,” said Sergeant Gregory Kenney from the Connecticut State Police.

Satula’s daughter arrived at the scene a few hours after the accident.  She stood just feet from the vehicle that still had her mother’s body inside of it.  She spent several hours with state police at the scene.

The USPS says that Satula had been a rural mail carrier since 1996.  Many people in the town of Bethlehem say they knew her and were shocked to learn of her death.

“I would see her in the post office and around town,” said Shanna Butkus. “You would run into her. Just being in a small town you run into everybody.

John Small said that Satula delivered mail to his house and the she was a wonderful person.  “I feel like it’s a big tragedy. It’s not a good thing at all,” said Small.
