Prescription Price Dispute Leads to Shooting, Arrest

Police said a South Windsor man went looking for his doctor because his drugs were too expensive.

A South Windsor police officer shot at a man accused of pulling a gun after vandalizing his doctor’s mailbox and garbage cans over the high cost of medication, police said.

Police said David Hamilton, 67, went to his doctor’s office in Manchester around 3 p.m. on Friday because he thought he should have gotten prescribed medicine for a cheaper price, police said.

The doctor was not in the office when Hamilton arrived, but he knew where the doctor lived in South Windsor, went to his house and ran into the mailbox and garbage cans with his car, police said.

When a South Windsor police officer went to Hamilton’s apartment, Hamilton went into his bedroom for his identification but came out with a rifle and pointed it at the officer, police said.

The officer, a six-year veteran, feared for her life, police said, so she fired at least one shot from her service weapon at Hamilton, police said.

After the shot was fired, Hamilton’s 49-year-old son grabbed his father and held him down until the officer could handcuff Hamilton, police said.

Police said no one was injured and it’s not clear whether Hamilton fired a shot at the officer.
Manchester police and the Hartford County State’s Attorney Office are investigating.

Hamilton was brought to the Manchester Police Department. No information has been released about charges.
