Prison for Problem Inmates Only?

A Connecticut prison could wind up as a sort of time-out corner for the state’s worst-behaved prisoners.

A Connecticut task force is considering recommending that the maximum-security Northern Correctional Institution in Somers be used exclusively to house problem inmates.

It's part of a plan to help reduce assaults on correctional officers.

State Correction Department officials oppose the recommendation and said it needs to house dangerous gang members at the facility as well.

House Speaker James Amann created the task force, which will meet next month to vote on a final report to the General Assembly, which convenes in January.

Other recommendations include reviewing the effectiveness of the state's point system that penalizes problem inmates.
