Protesters Are Against Plans to Dump in New Haven Harbor

Boaters who use New Haven Harbor are protesting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ plans to dump thousands of cubic yards of silt and other materials dredged from Bridgeport's harbor.

NHPower, a group of 100 or more boaters and residents, plan to organize a procession of boats on Sunday afternoon to demand a halt to plans the Corps has to transfer dredged material to Morris Cove.

Critics said some materials are toxic, but Timothy Dugan, a spokesman for the Corps, said Wednesday that sediments, metals and other materials are tested and disposed of based on federal environmental guidelines.

Material dumped in Morris Cove will be capped, he said. Federal funding has not been approved for dredging of Connecticut's harbors and the earliest dredging would occur is in late 2013, Dugan said.
