Hundreds Attend Public Hearing on Hartford Anti-Abortion Centers

Hundreds of people attended a public hearing in Hartford Monday on efforts to crack down on anti-abortion centers in the city and that meeting turned into a debate about abortion.

During the hearing, the public had the chance to weigh in on a city council proposal to rein in faith-driven pregnancy centers, which critics allege pose as legitimate medical clinics to lure women and hand out misleading information about abortions.

Critics say one such center opened close to a facility at which abortions are provided.

Under the plan, the centers would be required to disclose whether staff members have medical licenses, and would be banned from engaging in false or deceptive advertising.

“What happens at this awful crucial moment in their lives, they're pulled off the path they’re walking on and taken somewhere by people saying who they are and what they're doing with their lives are completely wrong,” Kamora Herrington said.

“If you are so adamant about women having choices do not shut down the voices of non-profit organizations that are dedicated to helping women,” Simeon Spada said.

Anti-abortion activists call the proposal "the single biggest attack on the pro-life movement in Connecticut."

A vote could come by the end of the month.
