Quinnipiac Professor Featured in National Geographic

When he's not in the classroom, you might find one Quinnipiac professor working with mummies.

Ron Beckett spent time in Papua New Guinea helping the leader of the Koke village restore his father's mummy and his work will be featured in the September issue of National Geographic. Beckett is professor emeritus of biomedical sciences at Quinnipiac.

Beckett tells The New Haven Register that mummies are still a part of village life in Koke, not ancient artifacts as they are in Egypt. "We were actually introduced to the mummies as if they were living people," he said.

Beckett also tells The Register that the village's mummification process, called "smoked body," is fantastic and even preserves internal organs.
