Racing to Find a Home

Racing greyhounds are in desperate need of a home. The dogs used to belong to a racetrack in Massachusetts that's closing down. Now a Connecticut organization has taken some of them in but is looking for permanent homes.

“There’s a sense of urgency in that all of a sudden we have 150 to 200 dogs that we have to place so we're bursting at our seams with dogs in our foster care system,” says Nancy Javor, the Vice President of Connecticut Greyhound Adoption.

So she’s reaching out to dog lovers for help, “we could use cash donations with the vetting of these dogs. They come unvetted so they are spayed and neutered and shots and are given a dental prior to adoption.”

Javor’s volunteer group could also use foster homes until the hounds find their forever homes. Homes like Jean Ferris' in Madison,” one would think that a dog that was raised on the track and didn’t have a lot of interaction with families you’d think it would be a difficult transition but I can tell you its not a difficult transition.”

Dozens of these pooches are already in foster homes - others are still at the track, prepping for one last race this Saturday. Once the finish line is crossed at that race the race to find new homes for these hounds begins.

Javor and her group don’t have much time, “the good news is that the track has vowed to house these dogs for two months which means they’ll give them shelter and give them food.”
