Reading a Book a Day, for a Year

One woman plans to live a storybook life for a year, literally.

Nina Sankovitch has embarked on a journey to read one book every day for one year. That's 365 books in 365 days, including novels, short stories, mysteries and comedies.

Sankovitch, who lives in Westport, reads the book and then the next day, she will write a "book report," detailing her immediate feelings about what she read. These reports are readily available on her Web site and on Twitter.

On her Web site, Sankovitch says she embarked on this project because of her love of reading and thirst for knowledge. She describers herself as "a little lost" and hopes the books will help her understand the world and her place in it.

She is also trying to fill a void left after her sister died at the age of 46 after a brief illness. Sankovitch's sister loved to read and this project would help to fulfill that love.

Sankovitch says she hopes to find empathy, guidance, fellowship and experience as she turns the pages.

Ms. Sankovitch is a former environmental layer with a degree from Harvard, according to the New York Times.  A non-reading indulgence, she told the times, is watching “NCIS” while folding laundry. Still, to make this work, she’s cut out a lot — the garden, The New Yorker, wasting time online, ambitious cooking, clothes shopping and coffee with friends.

Sankovitch says every book will be a new one that she has never read before embarking on this journey. Through the project, Sankovitch says she hopes to inspire a new generation of readers. She was at 350 as of Tuesday.
