Remains Found Last Year Are Missing Kayaker

Michael Krupa, of Middletown, never returned from kayaking in 2009.

DNA analysis has confirmed that human remains found in the Housatonic River in May 2011 are those of a Middletown man who was reported missing after going out kayaking on Long Island Sound in 2009.

Michael Krupa, of Middletown, was reported missing in 2009 after he and a friend had gone kayaking near Charles Island in Milford and both boats flipped over.

Neither Krupa nor his friend wore a life vest went they began the kayaking trip around midnight, fire officials previously said.

The friend was able to swim to a sailboat that was anchored, woke up the people on-board and they called 911. Crews searched for Krupa, but it was not until May 2011 that his remains were found.

They were found in the Housatonic River near the Stratford Army Engine Plant and sent to the State Forensic Laboratory for identification, according to Stratford police.

Examiners at the lab have been able to determine that the remains are that of Krupa and his family was notified on Saturday.

The Stratford Police Detective Division, Milford Police Department, Connecticut DEEP and Connecticut State Police Major Crime handled the investigation.
