Former Department of Ed Spokesman Dies at 60

Thomas Murphy, a longtime state official, lost his battle with cancer.

The former spokesman of the state's Department of Education passed away over the weekend.

Thomas Murphy, 60, of Hamden, died after a long fight with cancer.

State officials said he died on Saturday after three weeks in hospice care.

Murphy retired last June after almost 20 years of state service to focus on his cancer treatments.

Gov. Dannel Malloy expressed sympathies on Sunday to Murphy's family and friends.

"Tom served several Commissioners of Education and throughout his tenure, his integrity, vast knowledge of subject matter affecting Connecticut's public schools and good humor carried the day," Malloy said in a statement.

Murphy had been the Department of Education's public information officer since 1992 before his retirement.

He previously worked for the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities and the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
