CT Colleagues React to Giffords' Shooting

As Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recovered from a gunshot to the head, her colleagues in Connecticut were reacting to the tragedy.

"Gabrielle Giffords is one of the smartest, most caring members of Congress I know," said 2nd District Congressman Joe Courtney.

Giffords, a Democrat, was shot in the head while meeting with constituents in Tuscon, Arizona around 10 a.m. local time. At least 18 people were shot and six were killed in the spree.

"We entered Congress the same year and have served together on the Armed Services Committee, where she has distinguished herself as a strong supporter of the Air Force and military families," Courtney said.

A surgeon at the hospital where Giffords was taken said the Congresswoman was out of surgery and he was optimistic about Giffords' recovery. Among the dead were a 9-year-old child and a federal judge, according to several reports.

"I am praying for her and the other victims of today's shooting," Courtney said. "I condemn this dastardly attack on her and our democracy."

"Congresswoman Giffords is respected by all of our colleagues for her conviction to public service," 1st District Congressman John Larson said. "With a benevolent soul and a gentle heart, she serves her home state with great pride and passion".

"This tragedy is one that touches all of us, and one that will leave an indelible mark on our nation for generations," Larson said.

"I am devastated by this senseless attack on my friend and colleague, Gabby Giffords," said 3rd District Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. "Congresswoman Giffords is and extraordinary representative for her constituents, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this horrible tragedy."
