Repairs Scheduled for the Mystic River Bridge

The Mystic River Bridge will finally be receiving some much needed repairs, thanks to the state.

On Thursday, the State Bond Commission approved $20 million in major repair work for the Rte 1 bridge that runs over the Mystic River, between Groton and Stonington.

"Commuters and tourist count on this Post Road bridge year-round and this finding will get this project moving and enhance the region's economy," said Governor Jodi M. Rell. "It also must be maintained in good order so to accommodate both commerical and pleasure marine craft."

The schuled repair work includes replacing the bridge's mechanical and electrical systems, installing sewer and water lines, structural repairs, painting, and replacement the control house.

Bids for the project are expected to open in August and the Governor's Office says that the project should be finished within three construction seasons or by 2012.

The 87-year-old bridge is used by about 12,000 motorist every day.
