2 Schools Closed Due to East Lyme Water Main Breaks

Some residents are urged to boil their water.

Flanders School and East Lyme High School are closed Thursday after two water main breaks on Boston Post Road in East Lyme and town officials put out a warning Wednesday for some residents to boil their water before using it.

East Lyme Public Safety said the boil water order affects residents on Boston Post Road and adjacent side streets from Lovers Lane east to Flanders Four Corners at the Route 161 Intersection and south to Society Road on Route 161.

Customers in that area should boil their water for at least two minutes before use and might see discolored water.

There is some bottled water available at the Flanders Fire Department.

The first pipe burst around 4 p.m. Wednesday around Lovers Lane. Then, as crews tried to shut off the valves, the water pressure burst a second pipe on Route 1 near Upper Pattagansett Road.

Officials from public works said the mains have been repaired and water is back on. The two schools will be open and operating on a normal schedule on Friday, according to the superintendent's office.

Several people are reporting the water is discolored and public works officials said they will be testing water samples and updating customers when more information is available.

“We’ve been up boiling water for the dogs and whatnot,” Sandy Brown, of East Lyme, said. “It’s been a little nightmare but we’ve been getting through it.”
