Roads Too Narrow for Buses

The storm hit last Thursday but the roads in Portland were still too narrow Sunday, so authorities cancelled school for Monday.

"I was very surprised," said Shannon Hodge, whose son goes to Gildersleeve Elementary School in Portland.  "I was looking forward to it because I'm expecting the next two days to be closed, with the bad weather coming up."

She and her son and daughter came out of the Portland Library with books.  The library had reopened after contractors cleared ice and snow off the flat roof.

"We'll probably have snow on the ground til June," said T.J. Hodge, a fourth-grader. "I love the snow."

His mother figured there'll be school in Portland til late June.

By noon, most of the treacherous intersections in Portland had lost their snowbanks, as heavy equipment lifted snow into dump trucks, leaving streets wide enough for school buses.
